TL;DR: On March 30, 2026, preschool app Keiki shipped an update promising "minor bug fixes." Within two weeks it held top-10 positions on dozens of App Store searches where it had ranked past 150 — while its title, subtitle, and screenshots never changed and its description changed by exactly one character. What actually happened on March 30
Keiki — a preschool learning app by BENIPOL LIMITED — shipped version 10.7.0. The release notes said what release notes always say: "Hey! We made minor bug fixes and small enhancements to make learning more comfortable for you."
The store listing looked untouched. Same title. Same subtitle. The description changed by exactly one character (a period disappeared).
Two weeks later, Keiki was in the top 10 for dozens of searches where it had previously been buried past rank 100:

Positions like 174 or 246 are functionally invisible — nobody scrolls there. Top 5 on a toddler long-tail query is where downloads actually happen. Keiki crossed that entire distance in days, on dozens of terms at once, while its public-facing metadata stood still.
Why it points to the hidden keyword field
That combination is the tell. On the App Store, an app's organic keyword surface is built from three text fields: its title, its subtitle, and a third field you can't see — the 100-character keyword list developers submit in App Store Connect. The hidden field has one special property: it can only change when a new app version is submitted. So when a ranking explosion lands within days of a version release whose visible metadata didn't move, there's only one plausible text-side explanation. The keyword field was rewritten and shipped inside the "minor bug fixes."
How fast does Apple index the keyword field?
Our position history puts a clock on it. Version 10.7.0 went live March 30. One day later, our March 31 crawl already had "3 year old free games kids" at position 37 — up from 158. By the April 6–19 crawls, the new rankings were fully in place, single digits across the board.
And the jump wasn't a slow climb through rank 80, 40, 20. It was a step function: 150-plus one crawl, top-40 the next, single digits the one after. Apple didn't gradually re-evaluate Keiki for these queries; it re-indexed the app's term set and slotted it straight into the top results.
Whatever indexing pipeline Apple runs for the keyword field, it starts within a day and completes in under two weeks.
The part that wasn't invisible
It would be a tidy story if a hidden 100-character string were the whole explanation. It isn't — and the surrounding six months in our data show what actually earns the right to stay in those positions.
Keiki tested its product page almost continuously. Our system detects App Store A/B tests (Product Page Optimization) by observing variant traffic in the wild. Between August 2025 and May 2026 we caught nine separate experiments on Keiki's page — most of them four-variant screenshot tests, some cycling over 130 distinct screenshot assets across device sizes.
The cadence is striking: tests through August–October, three back-to-back in November–December, three more in January–February, and a final four-variant test that ran February 24 to March 19 — ending eleven days before the 10.7.0 release. The sequencing looks deliberate: settle the winning creative first, then ship the keyword expansion into a page already tuned to convert.
The conversion engine was already compounding. Keiki's US rating count grew by 1,200–2,300 a month through 2025. From January 2026 it accelerated: +3,400 in January, then steady gains, then just over 6,000 in June alone — its best month ever, immediately after a June screenshot refresh (our media hashing caught 24 distinct screenshot assets in circulation during the swap, against the usual 14). By July, Keiki stood at 86,400 US ratings.
Ratings are a proxy for installs-times-engagement, and Apple can see the real numbers behind that proxy: taps, installs, retention. Whatever the keyword field claims, this is the data that decides whether the claim sticks.
And yes, there were ads. Keiki has run Apple Search Ads against roughly 3,800 search terms in our ad tracking since October 2025. Paid impressions don't directly buy organic rank, but they buy the download volume and conversion history that organic ranking feeds on. Every large organic climber in our dataset turned out to be running ASA at the same time — the "purely organic" growth story, at this tier, may simply not exist.
Getting in vs. staying in: what holds a ranking
Could this be luck — a category reshuffle that happened to lift Keiki? We checked two controls.
First, timing. Keiki's closest analog in our growth mining, TOYA TAP's "123 Toddler games for 2+ years," also improved this spring — but its jumps cluster in May and June, on its own schedule, not Keiki's. There was no single algorithm event in early April that lifted the toddler category wholesale.
Second, churn. Toddler long-tail results are brutally unstable: of the ten apps in the top 10 for "3 year old free games kids" in late February, only three were still there in July. Entering the top 10 of a long-tail query is common. What's rare is what Keiki did next: it held top-5 on its new terms for three months and counting, through a period when most of its February neighbors washed out.
That split — easy entry, hard tenure — is itself a finding about how App Store search works. Text matching (title, subtitle, hidden keywords) determines the candidate set and gets you placed, fast. Engagement decides who survives the next reshuffle. Keiki's step-function entry came from text; its tenure came from a page that had been A/B-tested for nine months and a rating machine adding thousands of reviews a month.
What this case teaches
- The keyword field is the highest-leverage 100 characters in ASO, and it indexes in days, not months. Keiki's entire visible surface stayed frozen while dozens of rankings moved.
- Ship keyword changes behind boring releases. "Minor bug fixes and small enhancements" is where the real work hides. If you only monitor competitors' visible metadata, you will miss their most important ASO moves entirely — you have to watch the rankings themselves.
- The description is marketing copy, not ranking input. A one-character description edit alongside a 200-position jump is as clean a natural experiment as observational data offers.
- Sequence creative before keywords. Rankings you can't convert are rankings you'll lose. Keiki finished its screenshot test on March 19 and shipped the keyword expansion March 30.
- Sustained rank is an engagement scoreboard. In a SERP where 7 of 10 incumbents churned out in five months, position is re-earned continuously. The hidden field opens the door; conversion keeps you in the room.

Caveats, honestly stated: the keyword field itself is not observable — its rewrite is inferred from the release timing, the frozen visible metadata, and the step-function shape of the jumps. Ranking causes can't be fully separated in observational data; Keiki was simultaneously running ads, testing creatives, and growing ratings. What the data does establish beyond reasonable doubt: the jumps were real, synchronized with the release, not category-wide, and durable.
